One pair of glasses changed her life

One pair of glasses changed her life

We affectionately called her squiggles. She was a young girl, struggling in public school. She lacked focus and self-direction. Determined not to let her slip away, her teacher gave us a call.

We met with this endearing young girl, along with her mother. Her mother was alone, and worked hard each day just to put food on the table. After a lengthy discussion about what might be at the root cause of this girl’s behaviour, we all came to realize that she may be struggling with her eyesight.

While eye examinations are covered for school aged children today, they weren’t at the time. T.A.P. arranged for a visit with an optometrist, and soon this bright, young girl was fitted with her first pair of glasses, to which she exclaimed, “I don’t see no squiggles no more!”

Almost immediately, “Squiggles” started to excel in public school and eventually, she graduated high school with honours. We think about her often today, and we’re so happy that, thanks to our community supporters, T.A.P. was able to help provide her first pair of glasses.

Dentures and a new smile

Dentures and a new smile

Melva* lived at PeopleCare in Tavistock. During a visit, her sister came to learn that Melva had broken her dentures. Melva didn’t have any kind of financial coverage to replace them, and she only received a disability pension, which wouldn’t cover the dental expense. So Melva’s sister reached out to T.A.P.  to see if there was any way support could be provided. Recognizing that there can be emotional effects due to denture loss, we felt compelled to support this family. We were able to reach out to a network of professionals and we found a solution for Melva. The denture solution was such a blessing, as Melva’s smile is lovely!

An unexpected illness shifts the family’s focus

An unexpected illness shifts the family’s focus

Life has a way of dishing out some overwhelming challenges at times. And nobody wants to hear about a family member becoming ill. But it happens. And how can anyone be prepared to hear the words cancer, stroke, heart attack. When an unexpected illness affects a family, their focus shifts from normal daily tasks to figuring out how to get to medical appointments. Those appointments can be daily and the medical treatments can cause further stress. Financial strain is often immediate. So T.A.P. is here for those moments in life when you’ve been thrown a curve ball. Nobody expects you to do it on your own.

When a family loses everything

When a family loses everything

A house fire is not only burns up the structure and the contents within it, but it also leaves a family homeless. And while we may be prepared with insurance in such a case, we are certainly not prepared to lose the foundation on which our family thrives. In times of financial strain, waiting for an insurance claim is not a feasible solution. We still have an immediate need for not only a place of comfort, but toiletries and groceries need to be replaced right away. T.A.P. works to keep food and toiletries on the shelves to help in desperate situations, such as this. While we aren’t a sustaining food bank, we are available to help in emergency situations and very happy to do so.
